As you may have noticed by now, Robert Kaufman Fabrics has issued a Girl Scouts licensed fabric line. As part of their launch of the fabric line, Robert Kaufman Fabrics wanted to have some projects available that would make use of the fabric.
A few months after meeting us at the 2009 Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh, representatives from Robert Kaufman asked our 15-year-old designer, Katie, to create a project that used the Girl Scout fabric. We were, of course, thrilled to oblige!
A former Girl Scout herself, Katie designed the Friendship Quilt for her fellow Scouts. Katie’s goal was to create a fun lap quilt that would be easy enough for girls who were new to sewing. The good folks at Robert Kaufman were so happy with the project that they asked Amélie Scott Designs to create four more projects for the Girl Scouts fabric.
Within a few weeks, Katie and Christine designed the Whoo’s Sleepy? Travel Pillow, the Get Organized! cookie sale organizer, the Super Cushy Sit-Upon (a variation on the sit-upon that pretty much all scouts make in their early days, which keeps their uniforms clean when sitting in the grass or on the floor), and the Sleeping Bag Tote (to help scouts carry and contain their sleeping bags on camping trips).
Like the Friendship Quilt, all of our projects for the Girl Scouts are simple enough for beginners. The patterns feature clear instructions with lots of diagrams, and simple explanations of common sewing terms and techniques.
In addition to giving Girl Scouts a good introduction to sewing and some fun and useful projects to create, these projects will also help scouts meet most of the requirements for a sewing merit badge!
All of these patterns are available for a free download from the Robert Kaufman web site. Click on the pattern cover here to be taken to the Robert Kaufman site.
We hope you enjoy the projects. If you are with a Girl Scout troop that has made one or more of the projects, we’d love to see pictures of you with your completed projects. Please send pictures and information about you and your troop to christine@ameliescott.com, and we’ll put the info in our Gallery.
